The Romantic Road - Germany’s Most Popular Tourist Route

Everyone knows it, the romantic road, this unbroken string of romantic and historic sites and landscape that lies between Würzburg and Füssen, the Main valley and the foothills of the Alps. Ideal for walking and cycling.

Enjoy the unique atmosphere while hiking through the Romantic Road.
Enjoy the unique atmosphere while hiking through the Romantic Road.

Is there a more intense way to explore Germany’s most popular tourist route than by bike or by foot? Surely not. There is no other form of travel where the senses are as alert. The unique atmosphere surrounds you literally every kilometre on the way from Main to the Alps. And all this on the quiet paths and lanes, away from the motorised hectic pace of modern life. The long-distance trail is ideally suited for extensive and intensive hiking that takes you through forests, along country tracks and directly through old towns and their attractions.

Strung like pearls on a necklace, the romantic road presents visitors from near and far with one treasure after another: historic old towns, medieval town walls with defence towers and gateways, Baroque pilgrimage churches, Romanesque monastery walls and the dreams of Bavarian fairytale kings made into stone. All these belong to the area just as much as wildly romantic river valleys, fishing ponds, rural land that has evolved into a cultivated landscape over many generations, shady forests, an ancient meteorite crater and the awe-inspiring panorama of the Ammergau Alps. Whoever goes on a cycling or walking tour here will be rewarded with the most beautiful sights that Franken, Baden, Württemberg, Swabia and Upper Bavaria have to offer. There are plenty of impressions thatawait travellers who cycle or walk allowing enough time and leisure and allow all the new and fascinating sights to have an effect on them.

Our Tip: Europabus in Bad Mergentheim

The Europabus stops daily in Bad Mergentheim. The journey times are tailored to the needs of the hotel and spa guests. The bus leaves at 11.15am at the bus station Hans-Heinrich-Ehrler-Platz in the direction of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The closing of the gap in public transport between Bad Mergentheim and Rothenburg has been particularly well-received.

The Europabus also offers passengers the possibility to take bicycles on board. As bicycle space is limited passengers wishing to travel with bikes must declare this three working days before departure.

Of course Rothenburg need not be the end of the line. The Europabus runs along the Romantic Road to Füssen and back daily. It is possible to stop your journey as many times along the way as you wish.

Tickets can be purchased from the Bad Mergentheim Tourist Information office.
