Stuppacher Madonna

In Stuppach (www.stuppach.de), (a district of Bad Mergentheim) in a side chapel of the local parish church of Maria’s Coronation you will find the famous picture of Mary by Matthias Grünewald (Mathias Gotthardt Nidhard), which is considered to be one of the most important works of medieval panel painting: the Stuppach Madonna. The Madonna found its home in the Hohenlohe-Frankish village of Stuppach in 1812, and there is hardly a picture of Mary in the world that is as wondrous in the tones of its colours, restrained and exciting in its marks, sweeping and dense in its symbolism.
